Ketamine Journey & Intentions

Ketamine Therapy Guided Journey Process

Hear how the journey of understanding leads to profound healing.
The First Step is Clarity. Your roadmap begins below.

Your Complete Ketamine Journey Roadmap

Prepare for your ketamine journey. Learn about Ketamine Set and Setting and how to form a Ketamine Intention. Clinical guidance from Robin McKinley, FNP-C, PMHNP.

1. Pre-Screening & Intake
Anyone interested in ketamine therapy must complete an initial consultation. A required pre-medication visit includes a comprehensive review of medical and psychiatric history, as well as current medications, to determine if ketamine is appropriate. Risks, benefits, and alternatives are discussed, and informed consent is obtained before treatment.
2. Instructions for the Day
  • Eating and Drinking: Do not eat for at least 3 hours before your session. Limit fluids for 2 hours (sips of water are allowed).
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to your upper arms. Many clients remove their shoes to fully relax.
  • Caffeine: Limit to approximately half your usual amount to avoid restlessness.
  • Medications: Take prescribed medications unless otherwise advised during intake.
  • Transportation: Driving is not permitted. Arrange for a responsible adult or ride service (Uber/Lyft). Avoid driving or major decisions until the following day.
3. Set, Setting, and Intentions
Ketamine is a guided therapeutic tool designed to help uncover root causes anchored in the unconscious. The space at Awaken is intentionally tranquil, helping the nervous system feel safe and open.

Forming Your Intention

Intentions serve as an internal compass. Robin will help you phrase an intention that is:
  • Present tense & Approach-oriented
  • Emotionally believable & Simple
  • Rooted in “I AM” statements
  • Embodied: An intention is not just something you think; it is something you begin to embody. A guided meditation or brief clinical hypnosis helps anchor your intention into the body. What is embodied often accompanies you on the journey.

Mindset Practices (Optional)

  • Meditation & Hypnosis: Calms mental loops, supports self-compassion, and opens the mind to new patterns.
  • Energy & Sound: Singing bowls and tuning forks help regulate the nervous system and promote balance and coherence.
  • Sensory Release: Sage, palo santo, or essential oils engage the senses, grounding you in the present moment and reinforcing a sense of safety.
4. The Medication Experience
The journey lasts approximately 45 minutes. You will rest on an extra-wide sectional with blankets, Beats headphones, and an eye mask.

Administration & Monitoring

  • IM Administration: Small injection in the upper arm with a second dose 10–12 minutes in.
  • IV Administration: 45-minute infusion with standard-of-care cardiac monitoring.

The Internal Landscape

Experiences during ketamine sessions vary. Some journeys are quiet, without strong visuals. Others may include seeing colors or geometric patterns, having spiritual or expansive experiences, or “watching a movie” of life patterns and memories.

At times, individuals may encounter shadow material with emotional depth. At other times, clients report feelings of love and light, a sense of peace, expanded awareness, and connectedness or oneness with creation. Both can be part of the process.

There is no right or wrong way to journey. The key is to remain open and allow the experience to unfold.

Robin remains with you throughout the session, providing a steady, supportive presence so you feel safe as you move through whatever arises.

5. Integration & Recovery
Ketamine integration therapy is done immediately after the journey to explore insights gained, translating abstract symbols into grounded, meaningful awareness in your lived reality. Robin develops a session summary with customized journey prompts to help you stay connected to the work between sessions. These prompts, along with the mindset guidance and tools you learn, are designed to help form and reinforce new neural pathways.

Recovery & Getting Home

Most clients leave after the two-hour session. For those who would like additional time to rest and integrate, a quiet recovery space is available. This space includes a comfortable leather recliner, blankets, soft lighting, and a journal, offering the option to sit quietly, reflect, or simply rest.

Recommended post-session practices include spending time in nature, journaling, and creating a calm, supportive environment free from negative content.

If you have made it to Awaken, your road has likely been long and challenging, and you deserve time to heal. This time is for you.

“It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.”
